_HISTORY
Bank Well is an ancient pond fomred in the post-glacial period approximatley 10,000 years ago. The limestone was formed in the carbiniferous period about 300 million years ago, from skeletons of small marine organisms which sank to the bottom of a warm shallow sea. This sediment solidified to form rock. Water cn permeate through limestone, making ponds unusual on this type of rock. At Bank Well a natural watertight lining of clay prevents the water from draining away.
Bank Well was given tot he people of Silverdale as a watering place for cattle and horses in the Enclosure award of 1817. The pond had been neglected for many years, however clearing and felling trees has now opened up the banks. Extensive dredging by hand pulling and use of a mechanical digger has restored the open water.
The pond was restored between 1994-1996 as a community project by Silverdale residents, supervised by the Countryside Managment Service. Ponds change naturally over time moving towards woodland, continued management will maintain the traditional nature of the pool.
